SEO is the lead agency for the Planning for an Affordable, Resilient, and Sustainable Grid Competitively Awarded project from the U.S. ![]() SEO is in partnership with E4 Carolinas (lead agency), Savannah River National Labs, Clean Cities Triangle, NC Clean Energy Technology Center, Duke Energy's Piedmont Natural Gas, Advanced Energy, and the Electric Cooperatives of SC on this project. SEO is also a project partner for the Alternative Fuels Corridor Planning Project–The Carolina Alternative Fuel Infrastructure Planning for Storm Resilience Project. During the 20 calendar years, the SEO provided SEP Formula dollars and Stripper Well funds for multiple electric vehicles and EV charging stations including 5 electric vehicle chargers at the NC Marine Fisheries Office in Morehead City. SEO is leading by example and prioritizing electric vehicles and electric vehicle infrastructure. The electric vehicle (EV) related goals in Executive Order 80 are to increase the number of registered zero-emission vehicles to at least 80,000 by 2025 and to reduce statewide greenhouse gas emissions to 40% below 2005 levels by 2025. In 2018, Governor Roy Cooper issued an executive order to address climate change and to transition North Carolina to a clean energy economy. These initiatives have resulted in the certification of three clean-energy pre-apprenticeship programs: energy efficiency/HVAC, solar, and advanced manufacturing.Įlectric Vehicles, Charging Stations, and Alternative Fuel Transportation Projects The state-wide program aims to bridge the gaps between academic technology training and the needs of the energy industry through certification programs and on-the-job training. SEO and partners are currently working towards a sustainable, state-wide program with varied educational and experiential learning opportunities to develop the clean energy workforce pipeline and re-train the existing energy workforce. In total, 10 industry partners were involved to host these apprentices in Wake, Guilford, and Halifax counties. In partnership with North Carolina A&T State University, North Carolina Business Committee for Education, and Halifax Community College and County Schools, a successful 2021 summer pre-apprenticeship pilot program was held and 30 students were trained in energy efficiency, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC), and solar through both classroom orientation, and on-the-job training with local industry partners. It was a fantastic day, one for the memory books.The North Carolina State Energy Office (SEO) facilitated and launched a workforce development program to offer education and job training opportunities in various clean energy and energy efficiency-focused trades.
